Wine Terms: Wine Blend
The term wine blend or cuvee refers to a type of wine that is created by combining different types of grapes to create a flavor or bouquet of a wine. Many vintners will mix various grapes in order to maintain consistency in their wine year after year.
An example of this type of wine is Viansa Winery's Ossidiana, a combination of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Another is any of the signature wines of a Bordeaux winery. The Chateau Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville or their secondary wine Les Tourelles de Longueville, for instance. Both are mixtures of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. They come at far less a price than the Premier Grand Cru wines but are wonderful.
Note: When a winery refers to a Bordeaux blend, they are referring to a wine that is a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot blend.
