Voignier? No, Viognier.
I am sad to say that when I first had this wine, I mispronounced it. It is Vee-ohn-a, Viognier wine. Long A at the end. Remember, I make mistakes so you don't have to.
This type of white wine is mostly grown in the Rhone. People have had luck though in California, South America and Australia. It is prone to rot, so many winegrowers avoid it. It does well in the Rhone because of the Mistral, winds that are said to chill a person to the bone. They cool the vines from the heat of the summer and they stay on the vines until completely ripe.
To me any grape that can make it through the Mistral, is just one more indication of a great wine. Because great wines go through stress, so that we don't have to.
Some common scents are floral, pear, citrus, apricot, and white pepper. That, white pepper, is a great taste in a wine. Very different from bell pepper and just pleasant.
Drink it young and I recommend enjoying it with sushi, or other Asian cuisines.
