A White Wine From Rueda? It Must Be Verdejo.

That is right. Verdejo wine is a necessary part of Spanish whites from Rueda. In order for this type of white wine to be designated DO Rueda, it must contain at least 50% of this grape. Typically Viura and Grenache Blanc are the other grapes.

The biggest issue with this wine is that it oxidizes easily. In order to avoid this, the grapes are harvested at night. Only the Spanish or French would take a siesta and stay up all night, just to make a great wine. (Besides, maybe there will be a party at the other end of the harvest.)

Just in case you don't know, Spanish wines are my diamonds in the ruff. Many people gloss over them in favor of their French neighbors. But they are great wines, that are well priced for the quality they deliver.

If you haven't tried one, please do. I have heard it described as oily, definitely has some body for a white wine. If you don't like the one you try, try another. Spanish wines, including these Rueda wines, really are great inexpensive wines and in our current economy, we all need to find some great deals!!!
