Syrah or Shiraz? Same Thing, Just Made In Different Places.

Syrah or Shiraz, are the same wine. The Syrah wine grape is commonly grown in the Cote Rotie, Cote Du Rhone and Hermitage.

It has taken off as a type of red wine grown in Australia and Northern California. It is called Shiraz wine in Australia and is one of their older vines. Older vines lead to more flavorful grapes so this is a good wine to try from Australia. Pikes Shiraz 2001 from Labels at Wine Library

I have shared this wine many times with friends. It is tannic, but not as overbearing as a Nebbiolo or a Cabernet Sauvignon young.

It has spicy flavors, lots of licorice, clove and black pepper, along with berries. Definitely strong flavors that go well with flavorful foods, like red meats and spicy foods.
