Dessert In A Glass: Sauternes Wine Anyone?

One of my most memorable wine experiences is of buying a Sauternes wine. It was in Paris and I was going to see some friends in Cannes. I needed an appropriate gift. My friend assured me this was a great choice and off I went.Chateau Guiraud Sauternes 1999 from Labels at Wine Library

Little did I know the reception I would receive, or how great the wine that I brought was. This is a beautiful, delicate, honey of a dessert wine made from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

It is sweet because it is left on the vine and harvested late. This allows a "noble rot" or botrytis to form on the grapes. As the grapes, typically the Semillon, condense and rot, they are harvested and made into a great wine.

This is a type of dessert wine that everyone should try and one that is great to give. I would recommend it on any hot evening, around a fire, in a pool or hammock. It is dessert in a glass and goes well with dessert too.
