Morro Bay Wine, On the Bay Of Course
When it comes to Morro Bay wine, your best option is Morro Bay Wine Sellers in town. There's only them and Aronhill on the Embarcadero. Personally, I can't recommend MBWS enough. They have a great selection of wine and the owners are great people. When I was there I met Chris and his wife, who was cleaning while the kids were away for the weekend. They are endearing.
I liked their wine selection enough to join their wine club. It's pretty reasonably priced, especially if you don't have to pay for shipping. If you do, its still worth it in my opinion. Just want to stop in. They have a 13 wine selection ranging from Pinot Gris to Viognier to naked Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir to Zinfandel. We were won over to the wine club by the Freemark Abbey Cabernet.
Feel more like a winery tasting room? Aronhill's the place to go. The owner, VP, co-vintner, whatever other hat she needs to wear, pours their 5 wine flights daily, starting at noon. Wine is good and she's incredibly knowledgeable. She was worried I was stressing my wine and she might be right.
Lastly, if you're feeling a bit more adventurous. Head up to Main St. and La Maison Bleue. It was sold and turned into a wine bar in February, 2009. The new owners are friendly and you can have your choice of whatever 3 wines they have for $5. Good deal, especially since I ended up drinking more than 3 wines. The food isn't typical wine food, but it's good. Loved the salsa but had to clear my palate for more wine after eating it.
Need more wine? There are plenty of restaurants, with wine and plenty of beautiful places to stay that are close to lots of other central coast wine.
Morro Bay Restaurants:
I like to eat at Shawn's on Main St. where they have a menu prix fixe (4 courses with wine pairing for $50, hard to beat). Corkage is also minimal and dinner is worth it. So bring a bottle of wine from your local explorations.
The Galley and Windows on the Water are the places to go on the boardwalk. Windows has several specials. Check out their banners during the week. They have everything from Sliders and Beer, to half price wine flights. Just be sure to show up on the featured nights.
Saturdays, there is a cute little farmers market on Main from 3-7PM and there is a guy who sells the best chai tea ever. It's called SLO Chai, and I get the Honeybush Chai tea. He sells it in packages that last for months too.
Another great feature of the market is that both The Rock and La Maison Bleue have open mikes. There's plenty of local talent and they all seem to show up.
Morro Bay Lodging:
Morro Bay is beautiful and peaceful. It is the type of place you can get around without a car. When we stay, we like to stay at a condo a couple of blocks from the boardwalk on Main. We rent from, Real Estate Holdings on Main 805-772-7732. They are great when it comes to renting, buying or long term leasing a Morro Bay Condo and we love to stay there.
Right across the street is the Masterpiece Morro Bay Hotel and they have a three nights for the price of two deal. As if anyone needed a reason to stay an extra night.
My parents stayed at the ,b>Days Inn on Main this last trip because it was the cheapest place they could find. They had a continental breakfast and a concrete lanai that we dragged a table onto every night for after dinner wine.
To Do:
In the morning, we like to walk down to The Rock and get our morning cup of joe. They have a great back patio that's open rain or shine. It has a fountain and some interesting 3-D artwork. Then we take a walk down the boardwalk to the park. Our little guy runs around for an hour and then we can head back and hang out with family.
During the day, we spend most of our time at Morro Bay beach or discovering wine at any of the Paso Robles, Arroyo Grande, or San Luis Obispo wineries.
Want to enjoy the water, there are little electric boats you can rent for an hour and fit at least ten people into. We only tried with 5 people. Or better yet, go on a kayak trip. We went through Central Coast Outdoors. They make a great lunch and take you into parts of Morro Bay Estuary that you couldn't otherwise see. The last stop is at a beach opposite the dock where you launch. You can walk to the beach on the oceanside while they make lunch and then come back for some great sandwiches, with some local wines and tabouleh salad.
It's a short walk to the beach from these trips and where better to enjoy the sunset. Morro Bay is the type of place that people fall in love with on vacation and change their lives by moving there. Take it from me, I am still thinking about it.
