Cabernet Sauvignon is the Mask That Cabernet Franc Hides Behind

You probably have heard of Cabernet Sauvignon, but Cabernet Franc wine? I think you've had it on many occasions only it was in disguise. This masked crusader is a type of red wine and winegrowers use it to temper Cabernet Sauvignon.

It is one of the grapes grown in Bordeaux for their blends and it is less tannic than Cabernet Sauvignon. It is easier to drink young, as it develops fruity and herbaceous flavors early on. I identify it readily by its vegetal nose though. It may smell of pepper more black than green and eucalyptus.

This, along with Merlot, is one of the grapes that allows Bordeaux wines to open in their first few years. So, when you drink one of these wines young and it tastes fruity and like vegetables, that is this grape. As they age, open, and their bouquet fills out, that is the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Don't be mistaken, this grape ages well too. The older the vines the more it will age. In fact, if you find a varietal of this, buy it. It's a wonderful grape and definitely worth the adventure.

And with Cab, it's a beautiful marriage, made in Bordeaux.
